Before I tell you about Widgets, there is something that you should know beforehand and that is about widgets. Widgets are actually tiny, little applications which are generally coded to perform a single function. The concept of widgets gained importance with Yahoo’s Widget services and there was very little probability that the widgets won’t throng the mobile phone market.
Widgets can be micro applications ranging from automatic password managers, currency converters, news headlines retrievers and weather forecast information. Since the applications are very tiny and can be added as add-ons, they are very best suited to the mobile phone application development environment. Once you have signed in for the application on the website, you need to select the services for which you need to use the mobile client.
Using them is very easy, once you are done with the selection part, you can place the widgets on the virtual screen options, place the icons in any order anywhere you want. Once you have finalized, the settings will be imported to your mobile phone. As if know, there are not many widgets services available except the conventional RSS feeds so nothing much can be said about the user reviews and the feed backs. The utility of the widgets will be better understood when more services are being made available.
One of the limitations that I came across is that, if you are reading feeds and you come across a web link, then you can’t open the links right away from the widget service. You will have to copy the link and open in the phone browser. Now that is some serious limitation, atleast for me. Another of the issues is, the application is J2ME based and proves to be heavy on some phone but on the newer version, it don’t think there will be much of a problem.
